How Homeowners Can Get Tax Credits and Rebates on a New HVAC System

What to Know About This New Piece of Legislation and How it Promotes Energy-Efficient Upgrades

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the U.S. is seeing a historic increase in the price of everyday goods, from household appliances to groceries. This has made it difficult for many homeowners to make ends meet. The government has passed the Inflation Reduction Act to help make things more affordable (and reduce the country’s carbon footprint).

This legislation makes it easier for homeowners to purchase and install eco-friendly heaters, air conditioners, and heat pumps by offering tax credits and rebates. In this blog, homeowners can learn more about the Inflation Reduction Act and what it could mean for their next HVAC upgrade. For more information about what this act entails, including its other benefits, one can read it here

The Inflation Reduction Act Makes Getting a New HVAC System Affordable

inflationThe Inflation Reduction Act is an important tool that helps Americans stay ahead of rising energy costs while improving the environment. It is designed to help homeowners save money by reducing the cost of energy-efficient air conditioners, heaters, and heat pumps. Under the act, those who purchase qualifying new energy-efficient appliances receive tax credits and rebates.

The amount varies depending on the type of appliance being purchased and the energy efficiency rating. In addition to providing cost savings, these appliances also help reduce energy usage in the home, providing savings on utility bills and environmental benefits as well. Qualifying households can save hundreds of dollars per appliance purchased and help support a transition to a cleaner energy economy.

What Are the Requirements for the Inflation Reduction Act’s Benefits?

The Inflation Reduction Act provides tax credits and rebates for energy-efficient HVAC systems and heat pumps that meet the efficiency requirements. For instance, forced-air furnaces must have an AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) rating of at least 90% to qualify for tax credits and rebates. Similarly, air conditioners and heat pumps must have a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating of at least 16 to qualify for the benefits.  Additionally, boilers must have an AFUE rating of at least 95%, and geothermal heat pumps must have an EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating of at least 14.5 to qualify for the tax credits and rebates.

It is important to note that these requirements are subject to change, so homeowners must consult with their local HVAC installer or other relevant authorities to determine the exact specifications for their particular system or pump.  Furthermore, these credits and rebates are only available for installations starting in 2023 and beyond.  With the proper information and understanding of the requirements, homeowners can take advantage of the tax credits and rebates provided by the Inflation Reduction Act.

The Benefits of Getting a New HVAC System save

There are countless benefits to getting a new heater, air conditioner, or heat pump and replacing an older one, including:

  • Longer lifespan
  • Better efficiency
  • Saving money on utility bills
  • Fewer problems
  • Better performance

By taking advantage of the rebates and tax credits offered in the Inflation Reduction Act, homeowners will not only save money through tax credits and rebates, but because the system is required to be energy efficient, they will also save money on their energy bills.

Can I Install My Own A/C System?

It can be tempting to do it yourself when it comes to replacing your A/C system. However, it’s important to leave this job to the professionals. Our Elite team is ALWAYS here for you and any A/C issues you may encounter. Find out why you should ONLY let a licensed professional install your A/C system!

Permit and Codes

permits and codesInstalling an A/C system in Florida is considered a construction project by county governments. A permit is required for all construction projects in Florida. A licensed air conditioner contractor will need to register and receive a certificate from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Not only will your A/C installation require you to obtain a permit, but it also will make you abide by Florida Building Code requirements. These codes cover general requirements, materials, and building mechanical systems. A professional technician will also ensure that every part is installed correctly and that there are no leaks in your ductwork.

Warranty

warrantyNot only will choosing a licensed A/C professional to install your system ensure it is properly installed, but you will abide by the manufacturer’s warranty. Many system manufacturers require that a professional technician installs the unit to comply with the manufacturer’s warranty. It can be enticing to shop online for a better deal on your unit, but the savings will be short-lived. You don’t want to run into a complication or repair no longer covered by the manufacturer because you decided to DIY.

Safety

safetyThe main reason to choose professional installation is your safety. The codes and permits required to install your A/C system are in place, so you don’t put yourself or your family at risk. Installing an A/C system requires you to deal with electrical wiring and could lead to electric shock, not to mention the possibility of a gas leak from the refrigerant.

Should I Replace My A/C System?

When To Replace

Knowing when it’s time to replace a home's A/C system can be difficult. A/C systems are crucial to the comfort of Florida homes throughout the entirety of the year. So, the Elite Electric, Plumbing & Air team has provided you with a few signs that will help indicate when it’s time to replace the system. Continue reading to find out what they are!

Age of System

old ac unitThe age of an A/C system is a telltale sign that it should be replaced. The Department of Energy recommends that homeowners replace their systems every 10-15 years. Newer systems are Energy Star rated or energy-efficient with programmable thermostats. If a homeowner chooses to upgrade their system, they have the potential to save up to 40% on their utility bills.

Cost of Repairs

As with any home system, the A/C system will require some TLC or a repair from time to time. However, if a homeowner notices the need for frequent repairs there are a few things to take into consideration. If a repair is half the cost of a new system, it may be better to replace it in the long run. Each time a repair is made, it is important to keep in mind that the system won’t be able to run at peak performance.

R22 Freon

Since January 1, 2020, R22 freon was discontinued in the U.S. due to its negative effects on the environment. Most systems older than 10 years require R22 freon and will need an unattainable refill at some point for a repair.

Inconsistent Running Time

If it seems that the A/C system is running for longer than usual, it may be an indicator that it is in need of repair. The system may be struggling to reach the desired temperature that it’s set to. This problem can be caused by bad coils or a failing blower motor. It is important to check these two components first because if they are functioning properly, it’s a clear sign that the system can no longer properly circulate air.

Rising Utility Bills

As the A/C system ages and its efficiency deteriorates, utility bills are expected to rise. Replacing an A/C system guarantees savings of 20-40% on utility bills while being comfortable throughout the entire year.
